Threatened Species

Threatened Species: The following list includes all mammals which occur in Armenia and are rated as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) or Vulnerable (VU) in the 2004 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. 

• Critically Endangered:
  • Armenian Birch Mouse (Sicista armenica).
• Endangered:
  • Dahl's Jird (Meriones dahli). (Endemic to Armenia.)
  • Schaub's Myotis (Myotis schaubi).  
• Vulnerable:
  • Argali (Ovis ammon).
  • Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra). 
  • Mehely's Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus mehelyi).
  • Mouflon (or Urial) (Ovis orientalis).
  • Wild Goat (Capra aegagrus).

Environmental and Social Data

Mammals

Number of endemic species: 3 (Groombridge & Jenkins 1994) 
Number of threatened species: 1996: 4 (IUCN 1996); 2000: 8 (IUCN 2000)

Armenia contains portions of the Caucasus & Northeast Anatolia Temperate Forests Global 200 Ecoregion (Olson & Dinerstein 1998, Olson & Dinerstein 1999)
